The Future of Teams
With advancements in modern technology, the way teams operate is changing and you’ve probably seen or experienced how first-hand. Organizations are leveraging access to a global workforce to fill talent shortfalls within their teams. With innovative technologies, work forces can collaborate virtually despite their physical location in the world. In the 2018 Future Workforce Report by Upwork, results showed that “52% of managers cited shortage of talent as the top driver for adopting a more flexible workforce model” and that there is a strong trend toward freelance, temporary or agency workers.
Decentralized work forces and teams present opportunities for greater employee flexibility while also promoting a growth in productivity, as well as a new need for stronger team engagement.
Engaging Teams by Strengthening Culture
Although working from home and ditching the commute can add significant convenience and comfort, research has shown that workers face social isolation. Harvard Business review performed a study on China’s largest travel agency to research the effects of working from home on productivity. The results revealed that half of the individuals who worked from home actually decided to return to the office after the study because they felt isolated. In an environment where talent and skills are already in high demand, culture and engagement can be a critical lever in retaining a high performing workforce and promoting company values and strategy upon your team in order to optimize alignment.
Harnessing technology to promote connectivity
Attempting to stay up-to-date on technology is already a pain point for most organizations. Whether it’s figuring out how to print on the correct side of a sheet of labels or navigate advanced security protocols to share documents, the speed of technological advancement is challenging for organizations to keep up with the pace. As organizations move toward decentralized work forces and teams, it becomes even more critical to ensure that rapid communication is available, accessible and secure.
There are a variety of new and existing programs available to facilitate remote collaboration. One of my favourite communication tools at Propel Solutions is Yammer, an Office 365 productivity tool. Yammer has been described as the “Facebook for business” and allows for instant and dynamic communication across teams. It includes file and photo sharing, categorization and search functions, and of course group and private chat to facilitate agile conversations and collaboration.
